The Chemistry Regents Is Taking on the Part of Students This JuneThe Chemistry Regents will be interesting this June due to the recent announcements by several companies that have committed to sponsoring one of the two teams. It was only a few short months ago that they were dealing with cuts to their funding and being forced to reduce their overall staff. However, despite the challenges they faced, the regents are making some headway by reaching out to the companies in order to find new sponsors for the games.One of the most exciting parts of the games is that they will help the chemistry regents accomplish their mission. The students will be able to use the games as an opportunity to learn about chemistry and help researchers with their research projects. With the increased amount of energy and focus that the chemists are able to give to their classes, they can more effectively help the community by helping to support the chemists.The chemistry regents are focusing on a couple of t hings that have a direct impact on their students. First, they want to increase the number of students that want to pursue a career in chemistry and second, they want to encourage students to participate in research projects as much as possible. In other words, they want their students to be involved in every aspect of their life.The main goal is to increase the number of students that want to study chemistry and the entire workforce. A lot of these students may have family that would prefer them to attend school instead of working. Additionally, they will also be able to get away from their daily responsibilities.When students are away from their work, they can often better concentrate on their studies and come up with a plan for how they can improve their career choice. It has been proven that students that are unable to concentrate at work due to their lack of sleep will do less well at their jobs. The reason for this is that they will be more likely to miss deadlines or come inl ate.In addition to their interest in the community, the chemistry regents have found that their students are willing to make improvements in order to stay employed. This is especially true of the female students that are looking to break into this field of study. These students want to become a part of the community and are willing to do whatever it takes to make this happen.When students are looking for a research project, they will look at the general trends in chemistry. They will then find the project that best fits their career and do everything they can to bring it to fruition. There are many student groups out there that are looking for ways to promote their project and the research behind it so that students will not only be able to bring it to fruition, but also to improve upon it.In summary, the chemistry regents want to ensure that their students will have the resources necessary for them to succeed in their careers. It is also important for the students to feel that they are part of the community and they need to feel that the community is out to help them get a job. The research projects that they run are a great way to show students that they have this support system and that they should join in order to get a good job.

Senate Approves Teacher Bill

Senate Approves Teacher Bill The U.S. Senate recently passed a $10 billion bill to preserve teachers jobs throughout the nation, according to an article in District Administration. The bill will also send $16 billion for Medicaid purposes. Naturally, the $10 billion will not eliminate all teacher layoffs. However, it is expected to save 140,000 American teachers jobs. This bill is being passed in response to consistent reports that tens of thousands of teachers lost their jobs in April. Also, at that time, more layoffs were expected. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-California, said she would call House members back from their August recess for the House vote, which is scheduled for Tuesday, August 10th. The House is expected to approve the bill, which would send it to President Barack Obama for consideration. The $10 billion bill will be sent to schools across the nation that are struggling financially, in hopes of alleviating further teacher layoffs. Republicans tried to counter this bill with a filibuster. The bill then needed a supermajority of at least 60 votes in the Senate to pass. The bill passed 61-39. The foundations for this bill have been debated in Congress for several weeks now. The bill received the necessary additional push when two Republicans from Maine, Senators Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins contrasted their party. The $10B for education will be channeled through the states to local education agencies. How much money a school will receive will be based either on a state's formula for distributing state aid or the Title I formula. Congress is hoping this bill will enhance the learning environment in many public schools. This bill will preserve many teachers jobs, creating smaller classrooms and more effective, lower student-to-teacher-ratios. This will give students more one-on-one time with teachers, and teachers will be able to better respond to individual students needs.

3 Tips for Student Teachers Student teaching can simultaneously be one of the most exciting and intimidating stages of becoming a teacher. No longer are you just reading textbooks, discussing what you would do if things occurred, or role-playing a student-teacher scenario. As a student teacher, you are able to become familiar with the schools culture, observe how other teachers operate, and take initiative in various situations. Keep reading to learn three tips for student teachers: Student teaching tip #1: Familiarize yourself with your schools culture During the first week or two of your student teaching experience, spend time getting to know your schools culture. Seek out classroom and school-wide policies, as well as spoken and unspoken rules that teachers and students abide by. For example: What does classroom management look like at your school? How does your administration like students to walk in the hallways? Are there any common concerns or community issues shared by your student or parent population? The idea is not to make generalizations about your students or parents, but rather to be aware of patterns, knowing that there will always be exceptions to the rule. A great idea is to directly seek out this information, like asking your mentor teacher or principal, as well as to notice and observe daily interactions. Their initial impression is that the instructor doesnt get them or appreciate their potential. But if they stick it out, working through breathing, projection, compression, and dynamics, then they discover that their pronunciation is not as clean as they thought it was. I have not seen a single student in 20 years that did not experience this complex to some degree while learning to sing. I always wait to see whether they will bail or not right at the stage where the anxiety increases. 90% of my students have stuck it out and in six weeks have had brand new voices they didnt believe they could ever produce. For them, it was like going through boot camp and graduating as all that they can be. My admiration for singers has grown tremendously over the years as Ive watched students summon all their courage to face their own limitations and transcend them, just to be able to fall in love with music and do it justice with the instrument they wer e given. If youre serious about singing, then pricing, distance, and repertoire should be secondary considerations; the critical factor is the reality that a serious instructor is going to force you out of your comfort zone. A little-known empirically proven fact is that singers experience an anxiety response in the brain thats measurably more intense and prolonged than in other musicians. Training exposes your actual tolerance for criticism, as well as all those minute flaws that add up to a less-than-stellar vocal performance. So, take these steps before you go into formal vocal training and you will feel pride and earn the unending admiration of your instructor, supporters, and audiences: Sing in public everywhere, every chance you get. Record your voice through any means and listen as impartially as possible to yourself. Have as many people as possible give you frank feedback, and just write it down without responding. Come to your sessions with these recordings and feedback so your new instructor can assess you in as broad a manner as possible and structure your lessons appropriately. If you take the initiative to prepare yourself in this manner, you will see constant progress, your instructor will be able to be more thorough and creative for you, and you will soon grow immune to resentment from any form of criticism. So, in reality, the most vital aspect of vocal training is in learning to grow a thicker-than-thick skin. As always, remember humility. If you identify as more reserved, here are six ways to be even more motivating in your position: 1. Put Others First So many bosses get caught up in the numbers and benchmarks set by their higher-ups that they forget what’s in front of them: a team of people who drive each project and, ultimately, the company’s success. As such, it’s easy to forget their needs and feelings about expectations, pushing harder and harder toward a target that’s difficult to reach. As a motivating leader, it’s crucial to put your team members first. Sure, you have deadlines to meet, but you can do so with their needs in mind. Help! What to Do if You Get Nervous When Speaking Spanish Suzy S. Do you get nervous when you have to speak Spanish, even if youve taken months or years of classes or lessons? Youre not alone. Read on as Spanish tutor Emmanuel N.  shares his tips for battling your nerves and becoming more confident When it comes to speaking a language, there are two ways of being good at it â€" the more scholastic way (reading, writing, and speaking all by the book) and the more layman’s way (mostly conversation-centered, using the common vernacular of a region or country). In other words, you can be good at Spanish by knowing how to do everything by the book, or you can be good at Spanish by knowing how to have real person-to-person conversations. Most people who learn Spanish as a second language tend to be the former. Natural Spanish speakers tend to be the latter. This tends to be the pattern because people who learn Spanish as their second language tend to learn only by the book, while natural Spanish speakers learn by the book, as well, but mainly by speaking it with everyone they know. This is why I believe that people who are learning Spanish as their second language tend to be very good at it scholastically, but very subpar when it comes to natural, flowing conversations. Speaking Spanish: Where to Start When You’re Nervous I’m pretty certain you don’t want to dive right in and start speaking Spanish to people who are fluent, and that’s understandable. However, I do believe that when you push your limits, you learn more. Instead of speaking purely in Spanish, or with people who will speak only in  Spanish, I recommend speaking Spanglish â€" a mixture of Spanish and English where you use English words when you don’t know how to say something in Spanish. Aside from that, heres what I recommend you do: Have full-blown conversations in Spanglish with anyone you know who speaks a moderate amount of the language. Its better if they know more than you. Try your best to speak only in Spanish with a friend or family member for a whole hour. Even if you have to translate for them, it’s alright. The important thing here is to force yourself to speak only Spanish. Translate all the television shows you usually watch to Spanish, and try your best to understand what theyre saying without English subtitles on. Speak to yourself at the end of the day (every day), and speak in Spanish as you say what you did all day. Try your best to speak only in Spanish, and look up translations only when you can’t think of the word or phrase. Tips for Overcoming Your Shyness Believe me, when it comes to being shy about your Spanish speaking, I know what it feels like. You’re extremely shy because you don’t have the accent or can’t really roll your Rs. You’re shy because the other person has to speak slowly for you to catch up. Or, you’re shy because you struggle to remember Spanish words on the spot and stand there embarrassed. Whatever it may be, I’ve been there and know the pain of being a shy Spanish speaker. However, the best way to get over your shyness is to practice. When it comes to your accent, the best way to improve is to listen to other people who are fluent in Spanish. Try your best to imitate the sound they make. I recommend watching television shows in Spanish or translating your favorite shows into Spanish. Listening to Spanish songs is also helpful. I, myself, don’t have the Latino accent, but I have learned to speak Spanish effectively even though I have an absent accent. Without the accent, Spanish speakers can still understand you. It’s better to have no accent than to have the butchered accent (where you pronounce every Spanish word incorrectly). Why You Should Work With a Spanish Tutor Although you might be very anxious or nervous about having a Spanish tutor, it can be extremely useful for you. As a tutor, I strongly believe in having casual, laid-back conversations in Spanish or Spanglish for practice â€" it helps you get comfortable, and it eases your nerves so when I do challenge your knowledge of Spanish, you arent as timid. My lessons vary student to student because I know everyone is different and everyone learns differently. The main focus for shy or nervous students is to give them the confidence they need to speak Spanish proudly with anyone. Homework I do believe in giving homework to my students, but before you roll your eyes, my assignments are never that hard to complete. The following is normally what I would assign my shy speakers: Record yourself having a conversation with yourself in only Spanish. Record yourself reading for a few minutes from a Spanish article/book/website. Record yourself talking about your hobbies in English, and then translate it into Spanish. Chris started in September after learning about the opportunity through the Volunteer Portal at Bank of America, where he works. Bank of America is one of our Community Partners. Why do you volunteer? “I have always enjoyed volunteering. From talking with friends who work with Teach for America in the Charlotte area, I knew how much help was needed in public schools, especially at the elementary school level. Being able to help students grow and build a foundation in vital early math skills really appealed to me.” What are some of your favorite moments from working with the students? “There have really been so many, but a couple that stick out include “A teacher pulled me aside after standardized test scores came back and showed me the enormous improvement one of the students I work with had made. That was great in itself, but, as we were walking to the tutoring room, the student shared the news with me as well. I could tell how proud and happy he was. It was so awesome to not only see the student improve, but also to see his growing self confidence. “Heart holds a luncheon before winter break and again at the end of the school year. The luncheon allows the tutors to interact with parents and to celebrate the students’ hard work. Both students who I tutor expressed how much they enjoyed spending time outside the classroom with the volunteers and having their parents meet us. A couple months later, one student brought the luncheon up again and told me it was his favorite day of school ever. It really put into perspective how much it means to the kids for the volunteers to take a couple hours out of the work week to help them and to spend some time talking with them.” What would you tell someone who is thinking about becoming a volunteer? Do not hesitate and just go for it! At first, I wasn’t sure what to expect since I probably hadn’t worked with elementary school students since I was in elementary school. I have personally gotten more out of it than I ever expected. It not only provides a great break for a couple hours a week from whatever is going on in the office, but it is more impactful than you know.
